SARB and Currency Management

The SARB has the sole mandate to make, issue and destroy banknotes and coin in South Africa as stipulated in the SARB Act 90 of 1989, as amended.

South Africa’s currency is called the rand , taking its name from the Witwatersrand – the ridge on which Johannesburg is built and where most of the country’s gold deposits were found.

The SARB’s Currency Management Department works with its subsidiaries, the South African Mint Company (RF ) Proprietary Limited (South African Mint), which mints coin, and the South African Bank Note Company (RF) Proprietary Limited (SABN), which prints banknotes, to ensure that the country has an adequate supply and secure currency for use in the economy.
